On February 8, the 20th Winter Diplomatic Games will be held in the Moscow Country Club, GlavUpDK branch at the Russian MFA. This traditional sports event will take place just before Diplomatic Staff Day.
The Winter Diplomatic Games will be opened by Sergey Makarov, head of GlavUpDK. Among those scheduled to participate are the First Vice Chairman of the Russian State Duma’s Committee for International Affairs, the Olympic champion Svetlana Zhurova, the General Secretary of the Russian Olympic Committee and five-times Olympic champion Anastasia Davydova, the head of the Krasnogorsk City District in Moscow Region Elmira Khaymurzina, and the President of the Russian Union of Athletes and three-time Olympic champion Galina Gorokhova.
Teams of diplomatic staff from various countries and international organisations will compete for prizes in a range of different sports events (biathlon, cross-country skiing, table tennis, Russian billiards, mini football). The judging panel will include famous athletes, as well as professional sports judges.
This year marks an important anniversary - GlavUpDK has been organising the Games for 20 years. The history of the Diplomatic Games started in 1997 with a ski race between diplomatic teams hosted by the Moscow Country Club. That competition was the First Winter Diplomatic Games, and it kicked off a tradition of annual summer and winter diplomatic competitions.
Participants in the event will include heads and staff of diplomatic missions accredited in Russia, as well as senior staff from the Russian Foreign Ministry and GlavUpDk, and high-profile Russian athletes and cultural figures.
And, as per tradition, the Moscow Country Club will lay on an interesting cultural and entertainment programme for its guests.
We invite media organisations to get involved in promoting and covering this event. For accreditation contact Veronika Zaytseva, head of the Press Service Section, GlavUpDK Department of Public Relations Communications, tel. 8(495)-637-7804, e-mail vzaytseva@updk.ru. The deadline for applications is 12.00 on February 7.
